RARE N. AFRICAN TASSLE SHOULDER CORD 849TH SIGNAL INTEL
AN EXTREMELY RARE PIECE OF INTELLINEGCE UNIT HISTORY
Please note that the Ike is not for sale, only the HUGE WHITE TRIPPLE ROPE SHOULDER CORD w/CLIP & TASSLES. I do not own the jacket. Just the cord. That circular portion is 24 inches in circumference, and the lone cord with the lanyard hook on it extends after flipping up under the epaulet, a whopping 32 inches. This is the same clip that you se on .45 lanyards, and it makes me wonder.

You are looking at a rare distinguishing unit cord for the U.S. Army deployed theater signal intelligence service unit in North Africa. The 849th Signal Intelligence Service was the only such service to receive a numerical designation and was originally intended to function as a staff section, operating under the Signal Intelligence Division of Armed Forces Headquarters. Instead, in a hasty improvisation, it became a field unit. The 849th Signal Intelligence Service provided tactical signal intelligence units with the necessary analytical support and broke Nazi Cipher transmissions in the Mediterranean theatre. When the fighting moved to Italy, the problem of signal intelligence was solved by breaking the unwieldy signal radio intelligence companies into detachments and adding a small analytical element from the 849th SIS to each detachment to accomplish processing. As to the jacket.
